Montpelier Paving Project – Business US 2/VT 12

Project Location: State Street, Main Street, and VT 12 – Elm Street – Work to include milling, paving, manhole and drainage structure adjustments and extensive sidewalk improvements. VT 12-Northfield Street – new water, sewer, storm water improvements, sidewalks and a stabilized road base.

Construction Updates

Construction Update: Montpelier Transportation Projects, Proposed Schedule Week of 6/18/18

Project Location: State Street, Main Street and VT 12-Elm Street: work to be performed includes milling, paving, manhole and drainage structure adjustments and extensive sidewalk improvements. 

VT 12-Northfield Street: work to be performed includes new water, sewer, and storm water improvements, new sidewalks and stabilization of the road base.

Northfield Street, Phase 2 Construction Area: Derby Drive to Freedom Drive

DETOUR ROUTE: The detour route below will be in effect from 7:00 AM-7:00 PM Monday through Friday for Northfield Street traffic between Derby Drive and Freedom Drive.

~All southbound (towards Northfield) through-traffic will use Memorial Drive to Dog River Road to Northfield St.

~Northbound (toward downtown) passenger vehicle through-traffic will be permitted to travel through the construction zone.

~Northbound (toward downtown) truck through-traffic will be directed to use Dog River Rd. to Memorial Drive. Local delivery trucks will be allowed through the project.

~Sidewalks will remain open for pedestrians. Bicyclists may ride with traffic in the northbound direction or walk their bikes along the sidewalk in either direction until they reach the end of the construction zone.

Please Note: Northfield Street between Memorial Drive and Derby Drive will be open to two-way traffic.

Northfield Street Project Update:

Water main work will continue next week. The contractor will begin filling, testing and chlorinating? the section of line between the two Colonial Drives over the next week. Once completed, they will begin connecting services. This work will likely occur the following week.

Other miscellaneous work items will occur throughout the week.

Crews will be working on storm water improvements near the Econo Lodge.  

*Driveway Access: Construction activities may block driveway entrances for short periods of time as the operations move through the construction area. If crews are working across your driveway entrance and you need to enter or exit, please communicate your needs to an available crew member.


Pike will be paving for the City of Montpelier on US 2 between Pioneer Street and the Roundabout tonight (Thursday 6/14).

Pike will pave the leveling course on the project on Friday night, 06/15/18 with a 9:00 PM start time due to anticipated heavy traffic at the US 2/Main Street/Northfield Street intersection. Night work hours for this portion of the project end by 7:00 AM on Saturday morning.

Sunday night, 6/18 sub-contractor Lafayette Highway Specialties will begin work on the installation of new traffic signs. Work will begin on Memorial Drive, excavating and erecting foundations for the larger signs. Concrete for these signs will be poured at the end of each overnight shift, beginning at approximately 6:30 AM. This work is planned for the entire week of 6/18.

Work on sidewalk replacement areas and adjustment of roadway structures may potentially occur during the week of 6/18. Please be aware that crews may be out at some point during the week working on these operations.

Traffic Information: Alternating one-way traffic patterns will be in effect around construction activities.  Traffic control personnel will be on site to assist with the flow of traffic.

Please focus on safety when driving through the construction work zone and remember, it is against the law to use a hand held cell phone while driving in Vermont.

It is illegal in VT to use any handheld portable electronic devices while driving. The law carries fines of up to $200 with points assessed if the violation occurs in a work zone.
